Virtual Project Update

3D Mind Map work moves to Rockcliffe University Research Park

In the November edition of The Seventh Sun I introduced you to our work on Virtual Information Technology(VIT). The VIT group is developing new ways to visualize information in a 3D mind map using Mindjet’s Mind-Manager Pro 7. Our objective is to find better ways to view and collect information on virtual worlds, virtual humans, and virtual IT concerns, and from that information extract knowledge faster.

I’m pleased to announce that VIT World, currently located at Quiricosta (218,90,108) in Second Life, is moving to Rockcliffe University Research Park, Rockcliffe (116, 10, 27).

Phelan Corrimal, owner of Rockcliffe University, will help provide a research focus through the use of Rockcliff e University. As part of this, Phelan plans to have groups of people, such as VIT World, collaborate and share ideas back and fourth. This includes the development of a research park.

Phelan is also looking to set up a Business Leadership Forum where he will get more senior-level management people together to discuss issues concerning Virtual Environments and Virtual Business.

This is completely in line with our vision for VIT World. We hope to build a collaborative environment for the research and development of virtual information technologies. Science and technology will overlap with education, government, business, and gaming through the use of a virtual resource center.

VIT World Headquarters

We will initially expand the prototype of the Future Headquarters’ building that is now sitting on the hill overlooking the existing VIT World Sim — as we move operations to Rockcliffe University Research Park. We expect this building to encompass a complete Second Life island. We plan to invite other groups to join us in virtual information technology research.

VIT World will continue the development of a 3D knowledge base using the mind map software. We are actively seeking input for help in deciding where to take it next. Our current direction is to make it a collaborative tool to collect and mine data.

We have talked to several groups, and they raised a number of interesting points. There is a lot of excitement from people who can see various uses for the knowledge base. Suggestions include providing it in an educational setting where it can be accessed for learning, creating a global Wiki, and using it as an information store for research and collaboration. These things are not mutually exclusive.

We were concerned about the software technology at first, but we have proven that we can bring the information into the 3D space. We are collecting input for the next step. We are planning some additional demos to help gather further requirements.

We have accomplished a lot of good things in a very short period of time. Now we need to reflect on where we have been and ensure that we have the proper focus for moving forward. I believe our partnership with Rockcliffe University is a very exciting opportunity for VIT World – one that will benefit both groups in the future.
